I had a horrible moment of panic in the hair salon this week. It wasn’t because the hairdresser had lopped too much off one side or because my highlights had turned out an odd shade of orange, but because I realised that I am something of a failure as a woman.

Today is my last day as a staff member of News International. From tomorrow, I’m my own boss. Depending on my mood and how severe the hangover, I’m variously exulted, terrified or slightly jaded at the thought of it. We’ll see how it goes.
